CHAPTER 16

Riley helped Aubrey into the passenger seat, jogged around the car, and slid into the driver’s seat. He handed the valet a twenty and waited for the man to close his door. He drew her hand to her lips for a kiss. “I don’t want this weekend to end. Working and sleeping beside you have been beyond satisfying.”

The warmth of a blush spread across her face. She’d been doing a lot of that the past two days. Careful, girl. Sure, he’d asked her to apply for the wife position he’d claimed to have open, but he hadn’t mentioned it in awhile. Lately, it had all been about sex. Great sex. But that wasn’t a declaration of love. Her heart had beat out a tango Friday night when he’d mentioned visiting the jewelry store. She fingered the pearl necklace around her throat. It was exquisite, but it wasn’t a ring.

She needed to slow down before she got hurt again. That was her problem. It had always been her problem. She fell too hard, too fast. Men used her, got bored, and tossed her aside. Would Riley? She hoped not because she loved him.

What’s not to love? The man is gorgeous. And rich.

But that didn’t matter to Aubrey. Riley could have been a stone-cold broke troll and she would have pounced on the affection he offered. Okay, so he wasn’t offering affection as much as he was offering lust. It didn’t matter. Aubrey would take whatever crumbs he offered.

But look at him.

She’d been doing that all weekend too. That soft, golden hair, the color of ripe wheat with a hint of curl. He needed a trim, but she’d enjoyed twirling it in her fingers as he’d kissed his way down her body. And those eyes. She had been sure they were colored contacts until she watched him take out his real contacts and those amazing cornflower blue eyes hadn’t changed. The color was so unreal, it reminded her of the colorized black and white movies her mother watched constantly.

Mom. That was a mood killer. Tomorrow was visiting day, and she would meet with Dr. Akerman to discuss her mother’s progress and the results of the tests he’d run last week. As far as she could tell, there hadn’t been any progress, which reinforced her suspicion that this illness was all in her mother’s head.

If her mother was crazy, was it genetic? And if Aubrey was crazy, would she pass it on to her children? Children she’d never considered having until last Friday.

“Do you want kids?” she asked.

He didn’t hesitate. “At least six. Girls. I have this damned blood allergy I don’t want to pass on, and as far as we can tell, girls aren’t affected.”

If he could risk passing on a deadly blood allergy, what was a little mental illness? Besides, she’d have Riley by her side and Deb to back her up. They would help and support her. Not to mention the rest of the Tobins. A big, beautiful family.

Her mother had always been alone.
